Equilibrium is a 2D jump and run with RPG elements. Set on a post-apocalyptic planet Earth and surrounding the objective of regaining natural balance on earth, Equilibrium is intended for players of all ages and backgrounds who enjoy the thrill of an interesting story. Equilibrium is a learning game that combines jump and run elements with powerful artistic storytelling while also referencing the 17 UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals.
Equilibriums gameplay is similar to many other metroidvania games, meaning that the player has to explore the world and get several different abilitys that make it possible to solve puzzles and to discover new areas. These abilitys get unlocked by meeting with one of the many different Nature Spirits. In Equilibrium unlike many other games in the genre the enemies aren´t defeated by “killing” them but by freeing them from the darkness. Freeing many of them will also grant the player rewards like rare items, equipment or additional hit points.
When developing the artstyle for Equilibrium, it was my goal to create characters and enviroments that all seem to belong to the same world. I also wanted to use a clear visual language for all the elements in the game. The player character for example has a mainly white color scheme to be easily differentiated from the various enviroments in the game. Same goes for all the enemies and bosses, who have a mainly black design. The visuals combine the rather dark postapocalyptic setting of the game with more vibrant colors and thereby create a unique look.
